How to Get Here

The Roundhouse Retreat is located in rural Winneshiek County, approximately 5 miles west of Decorah, Iowa.

Directions:

From the intersection of Hwy’s 9 & 52 in Decorah, travel north on Hwy 52 for 2.2 miles. Turn left (west) on the Pole Line Road and travel 2.2 miles. Then turn right (north) on the Bluffton Road and travel 1.6 miles. The Roundhouse Retreat is at the top of the hill, on the right.

This area is well known for it’s great locally produced beers.  Toppling Goliath Brewery is distributed worldwide and also offers great food and entertainment. You can stop at Pulpit Rock Brewery in the heart of Decorah.  Or pop on over to Pevo Brewery in Calmar only a block away from the Prairie Farmer Recreational Bike Trail.

Winneshiek County is home to two excellent  Wineries, Empty Nest Winery and  Winneshiek Wildberry Winery

Just north of the border in Harmony Minnesota you’ll find Harmony Spirits, a craft distillery producing high quality vodka, gin, whiskey and rum.  Up in Spring Grove, Minnesota is Rockfilter Distillery maker of small batch and organic bourbon and whiskey

Experience the Scenic Upper Iowa River

Kayak, canoe or go tubing in the scenic Upper Iowa River.   Kayaks and/or tubes can be rented from  Hutchinsons Family Farm Campground  (just 2 miles from the Roundhouse),  Randy’s Bluffton Store, Hruskas Canoe LIvery, or Chimney Rock Campground. .   It is strongly recommended that you make your tube/kayak reservations in advance.

Shopping

 Spend a delightful afternoon strolling through  Decorah’s vibrant and beautiful downtown, where you’ll find a variety of  small family owned stores.  Click here to get started on your shopping adventure. 

Fishing

With 19 spring fed creeks, Winneshiek county is the heart of trout fishing in northeast Iowa and the many area Trout Streams are regularly stocked by the Decorah Fish hatchery.   You can also  fish in the Upper Iowa just 1/2 mile from the Roundhouse at the trail head of the Malanaphy Springs.

Biking & Hiking

Bike or hike on the beautiful Trout Run trail, a paved 11 mile loop around Decorah.  If you didn’t bring your bike, stop at Decorah Bicycles to rent one, you might even want to try out one of their new e-bikes!  The Decorah Park system also  has over 20 miles of off road trails for hiking, running, or mountain biking.

 

The Decorah Park & Recreation oversee over 600 acres of land encompassing 23 Parks and rec areas.

Decorah Human Powered Trails (DHPT) has built and continue to maintain over 26 miles of off road trails  in the for mountain bikers and runners and hikers

Museums

For a little taste of history  you’ll want to experience the museums of Winneshiek County. Decorah is the home of the National Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum  and Folk Art School and the Porter House Museum.  It’s a short drive to Spillville to the Bily Clocks Museum and Anton Dvorak Exhibit.   Burr Oak is home to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum

Parks

The Roundhouse is only 1/2 mile from Malanaphy Springs State Preserve, a scenic 1 mile hike to a beautiful 10 foot waterfall.   FOlks travel for miles around to experience the beauty of  the Decorah Park System.  Most notable for their stunning beauty and scenic overlooks are Dunning Springs,  Palisades,  and Phelps Park.  Click here for more details. 

Decorah Fish Hatchery and Eagles

The famous Decorah Eagles nest near the Decorah Fish Hatchery, where you can feed the fish, view the eagles, fish for trout in nearby trout streams, and enjoy the natural beauty of the limestone bluffs and Siewer Springs

Seed Savers Exchange

If you like gardening and are interested in Heirloom seeds, you must visit the Seed Savers Exchange and the Lillian Goldman Visitors Center just north of Decorah.
